Guest Speaker Kieran Snape Discusses the Adelaide Park Lands

Members of the Rotary Club of Prospect recently welcomed Adelaide City Councillor Kieran Snape as guest speaker at one of our meetings. Councillor Snape provided an informative presentation focused on one of our city’s most defining assets: the Adelaide Park Lands.

During the session, Councillor Snape shared practical insights into the current management, ongoing projects, and future planning for the parklands. The presentation offered members a clear overview of how the council approaches the balance between environmental conservation, community use, and the pressures of urban development.

To provide some context to the discussion, it is worth noting the unique history of the Adelaide Park Lands. Designed by Surveyor-General Colonel William Light in 1837, the parklands were a foundational part of his original plan for the city. Light envisioned a continuous ring of green space in a figure-eight shape, creating a deliberate boundary between the city centre and the surrounding residential suburbs. This design was highly innovative for its time and is a major reason why Adelaide is recognised globally for its town planning. In acknowledgment of their historical and cultural significance, the Adelaide Park Lands and City Layout were included on the National Heritage List in 2008.

We thank Councillor Snape for taking the time to attend our meeting and for sharing his knowledge with the club. His presentation prompted a thoughtful Q&A session from the floor and gave members a clearer understanding of the governance behind the green spaces we regularly use.
